Paper Quilling: Turning Shapes into Meaning

Grade Levels: 5th - 7th Grade

Length: 3 Weeks

Description:

This unit explores how simple shapes and lines can be transformed into meaningful images that reflect students’ identities, interests, and experiences through the art of paper quilling. Students will create a symbolic, themed-based quilled composition that functions as a personal visual statement, similar to a nontraditional self-portrait. By translating images connected to who they are–such as interests, values, memories, or aspects of nature–into quilled forms, students learn how intentional design choices, craftsmanship, and patience communicate meaning.
